Juneteenth is the commemoration of the end of slavery in the US. Also known as Freedom Day, June 19th is an official US holiday celebrating Black freedom. Juneteenth emphasizes education and achievement and is a time for both reflection and rejoicing. Here at Kittch we invite everyone to acknowledge a period in our history that shaped our society and continues to influence us all today. We have partnered with James Beard nominated Chef and former Olympian, Dawn Burrell, to curate a week of thoughtful programming reflecting and celebrating this important holiday. Burrell is Partner/Executive Chef at Late August, the latest concept from Lucille’s Hospitality Group. She is also working to advance the group’s non-profit, Lucille’s 1913, which serves as a conscious community collective that is building a vertically integrated ecosystem to combat food insecurity and waste; creating training and employment opportunities in traditionally under-resourced neighborhoods; and empowering communities to discover a self-sustainable livelihood through food. She also serves on the board of I’ll Have What She’s Having, a women-led non-profit raising community awareness and funds in support of better health and healthcare in the food and beverage industry.
